PhD Assistantship: Effects of virtual fencing on elk-cattle comingling and the implications for disease spillover

University of Wyoming · Wyoming · posted today

The Merkle Research Group is looking for a highly motivated, creative, and field-capable Ph.D. student to lead a project studying how cattle grazing management using virtual fencing can potentially reduce risk of brucellosis spillover from elk to cattle. The project is a collaboration between Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Beyond Yellowstone Living Lab, Greater Yellowstone Coalition, and University of Wyoming. The primary objectives include mapping areas of brucellosis spillover risk, comparing comingling risks before and after the implementation of virtual fencing, and quantifying direct interactions with behavioral observations in the field. However, the student will have the opportunity to shape and address additional management-related research questions. Data, some of which has already been collected, include cattle locations recorded by the virtual fencing collars and GPS ear tags, GPS collar data from elk, and field observations. Candidates must have a B.S. and preferably a M.S. degree in Ecology, Wildlife, Computing, or a related field. Applicants with experience managing and analyzing large spatial datasets (including remote sensing and animal movement data) in program R, conducting field work related to habitat and behavior, working independently and with a team on research projects, collaborating with wildlife managers and ranchers, and publishing peer-reviewed research will be favored. Successful applicants will be expected co-produce high-quality research with a collaborative team, present their work at professional conferences, and publish results in a timely manner in peer-reviewed journals. The successful applicant will be admitted through the Program in Ecology and Evolution at University of Wyoming. The student will be based in Laramie (USA), although field work during March-May for at least 2 years near Cody, WY will be required. A graduate assistantship will be provided, which includes tuition and benefits, and an annual stipend of $29,016. To apply, please email a SINGLE PDF file that includes 1) a detailed cover letter outlining, at a minimum, experience and interest in studying disease ecology and grazing management, field experience, and quantitative skills, 2) a CV, 3) contact information for three references, and 4) unofficial transcripts to Dr. Jerod Merkle (jmerkle@uwyo.edu) and Dr. Julie Brockman (jbrockm1@uwyo.edu). Review of applicants will begin November 9. Start date is negotiable, but could be as early as January 2027.
