Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology

University of Wyoming, Department of Zoology and Physiology · Wyoming · tenure-track · posted today

Assistant Professor in Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology The Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track position in Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek an innovative scientist who will establish an extramurally-funded research program addressing fundamental and/or applied questions in freshwater ecosystem ecology. We particularly welcome candidates whose research examines how aquatic ecosystems respond to environmental change and whose work connects ecological processes across organisms, communities, ecosystems, and watersheds. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative community of UW-based ecologists, hydrologists, environmental scientists, and natural-resource scientists working across Wyoming and the broader Rocky Mountain region. Potential areas of research include but are not limited to biogeochemistry and elemental cycling, aquatic-terrestrial linkages, water quality, food-web dynamics, and ecosystem responses to anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., climate change, land-use, invasive species, and eutrophication) in stream and lake ecosystems. Research that complements and expands existing strengths at UW and that integrates field experimentation, long-term ecological observation, quantitative approaches, modeling, remote sensing, molecular or isotopic techniques, or other innovative approaches is encouraged. The University of Wyoming provides exceptional opportunities for aquatic ecosystem research with world-class facilities, including the Red Buttes Environmental Laboratory, a research laboratory specifically designed for aquatic research, the University of Wyoming Stable Isotope Facility, and the AMK Ranch, a field station operated in collaboration with Grand Teton National Park. The University of Wyoming also provides nearby access to lakes, reservoirs, rivers, wetlands, and watersheds across elevational gradients throughout the Rocky Mountain West. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program, mentor graduate and undergraduate students and conduct research within a diverse dynamic department spanning from neurobiology to ecology and wildlife management and participate in the Program in Ecology and Evolution and other relevant interdisciplinary programs and initiatives. The successful candidate will also contribute to undergraduate and graduate education. Teaching responsibilities may include courses in aquatic ecology, ecosystem ecology, ecology, environmental science, quantitative ecology, or related areas, depending on the candidate's expertise and departmental needs. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to inclusive, evidence-based teaching and effective mentoring of students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in ecology, biology, aquatic science, environmental science, limnology, hydrology, or a closely related field, research expertise in ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, or a closely related field in freshwater systems, and evidence of scholarly productivity appropriate to the career stage. The University of Wyoming is an R1 research university, providing an environment that supports ambitious, externally funded research programs and interdisciplinary collaboration. Located in Laramie, Wyoming, UW provides direct access to an exceptional natural laboratory spanning high-elevation alpine and subalpine systems, streams and rivers, lakes and reservoirs, and diverse watersheds of the Rocky Mountain West. The university's location creates outstanding opportunities for field-based research addressing aquatic ecosystem responses to climate variability, land-use change, resource development, and other environmental pressures. Located in a high mountain valley near the Colorado border, Laramie offers both outstanding recreational opportunities and close proximity to Colorado’s Front Range, a bustling group of metropolitan and university centers of Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins. This beautiful mountain landscape offers outdoor enjoyment in all seasons, with over 300 days of sunshine annually. For more information about the region, please visit http://visitlaramie.org/. The University of Wyoming is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution and is committed to creating an inclusive environment in which all members of the university community can learn, work, and thrive. Review of applications will begin on November 15. Complete on-line application (link to apply) and upload the following documents as a single PDF file: 1) a cover letter (2 pages max), 2) curriculum vitae, 3) research statement (3 pages max), 4) teaching philosophy (2 pages max), and 5) contact information for three or more work-related references. The University of Wyoming conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer. Questions may be directed to the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Michael Dillon (Michael.Dillon@uwyo.edu).
