TURKEY RESEARCH IN MISSISSIPPI: Mississippi is proud of its wild turkey tradition and the landscapes being managed for this species. The wild turkey is the state's second most culturally important game species after white-tailed deer, and MSU has long been a focal point in the Southeast for advancing science-based turkey management in response to population challenges. MSU's Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture is already home to a nationally recognized body of research on wild turkey ecology. Faculty lead multi-partner projects with MDWFP, the NWTF, and other NGOs that are redefining how turkey populations are monitored and managed in working landscapes across Mississippi and the southeast. Recently, the Mississippi Wild Turkey Stamp, was created as a dedicated, user-supported funding vehicle for the science and management of this treasured gamebird. Revenues from the stamp may be used as matching funds or fiscal leverage to secure additional grants and other financial awards, making it especially important as a potential source of support for applied wild turkey research and management.
