MS POSITION IN CONSERVATION SCIENCES Revitalizing Hunting, Fishing and Trapping in White Earth Using Participatory GIS Project Summary Hunting, fishing and trapping are essential components of the culture and livelihoods of tribal nations throughout Minnesota. However, participation in these activities have been steadily decreasing in many communities. This is concerning because wild meat and fish are critical to tribal protein sovereignty and security. The Umana Laboratory (PIs: Christopher Shaffer and Marissa Milstein) in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities is recruiting a Masters Student in the Conservation Sciences program for a participatory mapping project focused on revitalizing hunting, fishing and trapping in the White Earth Nation. This research is in partnership White Earth Natural Resources and seeks to 1) identify the barriers to participation in these activities and 2) develop a community-based GIS for education, traditional knowledge exchange and increasing management capacity. Requirements & Qualifications • BS or BA in wildlife, ecology, anthropology or related field • Basic proficiency with GIS and strong interest in further developing GIS skills • Interest in mixed-methods research including qualitative and quantitative methods • Strong work ethic; excellent oral and written communication skills; high attention to detail; the ability to work independently with tribal partners; and deep respect for Indigenous sovereignty; dedication to cultivating respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities in research • A positive attitude and the personality to work/live amicably with others will also be an advantage Want More Information? • For information on applying check out: UMN Conservation Sciences Masters Program • Please contact Dr. Christopher Shaffer (cshaffer@umn.edu) or Dr. Marissa Milstein (mils0025@umn.edu) for additional questions.
