Two Eastern Wild Turkey Research Technicians (South Carolina/Georgia)

Description: We are seeking two (2) technicians to assist with a project focusing on wild turkey habitat use. Field work is expected to start January 1-5, 2027 and run through July 31, 2027 though these dates can be flexible. The project will specifically focus on roosting habitat and the effects of hunting on roost site selection. The role of the technician will mainly be completing habitat surveys at these roosting sites. The technician in South Carolina will be based in the SRS Forest Service station and will aid a graduate student with baiting and trapping January and February, although their main priority will be roost surveys. The technician in Georgia will be based at the DNR’s check station on Cedar Creek WMA and will be completing roost surveys and aiding with putting up and taking down ARUs. To accomplish these tasks, technicians will work independently with help from a graduate student. Due to the nature of this research, applicants must be able to work a flexible schedule, with possible holidays for data collection needs.  Overtime pay is not available. The research will be conducted on Savannah River Site, which is on the western edge of the state, near the border of Georgia. The closest cities nearby are Aiken (15 mins away) and Augusta (30 mins away). Cedar Creek WMA is near Eatonton, Georgia and about an hour away from Atlanta.  Housing and work vehicles will be provided on both sites Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants that have a B.S. in wildlife ecology or related field. Competitive candidates will be expected to: (1) Have some previous field experience, preferably with vegetation or habitat surveys. (2) Have strong interpersonal skills as daily interaction with federal government, state agencies, and the public will occur. (3) Work early mornings when needed. (4) Have experience operating and maintaining 4-wd vehicles. (5) Be able to responsibly work independently when the graduate student is assisting at the other site. (6) The Georgia technician will preferably have experience with climbing deer stands but not absolutely required.
