PhD Student in Quantitative Insect Ecology

Campbell Lab, Department of Entomology and Nematology, University of Florida · Florida · fellowship · posted today

The Campbell Lab in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida is recruiting a fully funded PhD student to begin as early as January 2027. Later start dates will also be considered. Our lab studies the spatiotemporal ecology of insects and the ecological systems that shape human, animal, and environmental health. We seek to understand and predict where, when, and why insect populations, life cycles, and interactions vary across environments. Our goal is to develop tools that help us to understand and anticipate these dynamics to improve overall health on our planet. Our research is interdisciplinary, combining entomology and ecology with geospatial science, data science, and quantitative modeling. We have particular expertise in zoonotic arbovirus systems, while working more broadly across insect taxa and ecological systems. We are primarily computational and are especially interested in approaches that bridge ecological questions with advances in data science, modeling, and computational methods. The student will have the opportunity to develop a dissertation project within one of several research directions. These include: * Extreme weather and insect dynamics: Develop a project within a multi-lab NSF-funded collaboration investigating how extreme weather events impact insect phenology and abundances at continental scales. * Vector-borne disease ecology and forecasting: Extend ongoing state-funded research examining the ecology and forecasting of insect vectors and vector-borne disease. * Independent research: Develop a new project aligned with interests and expertise broadly within overall lab research themes. These research directions leverage substantial existing datasets and a collaborative network, providing a strong foundation for project development. Because we are interdisciplinary, we are particularly interested in applicants with experience or strong interest in insect ecology + data wrangling and data science, coding, quantitative ecology, biodiversity science, or geospatial technologies. A background in entomology is valuable but not strictly required. The Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida is consistently ranked among the top programs in the U.S. and internationally. The Campbell Lab is highly collaborative, with opportunities to work with researchers across the department, UF, and a broader network of academic and agency partners. Interested students can send a cv, a short description of your research interests and experience, as well as contact information for two references to Lindsay Campbell at lcampbell2@ufl.edu. Please include PhD Opportunity and your last name in the email subject line. Lindsay P.
