The New Mexico Department of Wildlife's Skills Development program leads the Department's effort to provide hands-on skills for the general public. The public has expressed interest in learning how to safely recreate in the outdoors. This position is responsible for creating opportunities for novices to learn basic skills and for current participants to learn more hands-on skills, increasing their comfort level for recreating in the outdoors. This includes coordinating programs that can be duplicated and shared with volunteers and contractors. The Hunter, Angler, and Outdoor Skills Development Coordinator position requires experience developing and producing virtual and in-person courses to help people develop introductory and intermediate skills. - Provide hunting and fishing workshops designed to increase participation within the license-buying community. - Develop virtual and in-person skills development workshops and camps that are designed for novice and beginner hunters and anglers. - Employ R3 strategies to recruit, retain, and reactivate individuals into a variety of activities. - Provide workshops including introductory skills designed to enhance their hunting and fishing experiences that could include using tools such as mapping to navigate their trip, getting tips from experienced recreationalists, developing skills from preparing for the hunt to staying legal and safe while in the field, fishing, identifying fish, choosing appropriate tackle, and engaging in outdoor recreation, including ethical resource use. - Build relationships with partners, volunteers, and contractors that can help drive successful workshops and camps. - Teach and assist with hunter education classes and assist with related administrative duties. - Support and assist educational program managers with large public events, including large events, Outdoor Adventure Show, Youth Hunter Education Challenges, R3 and marketing efforts, Archery programs, off-highway vehicle safety and awareness programs, conservation education programs, fish and wildlife projects, marketing and informational efforts, etc. The ideal candidates will have experience in the following: - Evaluating, coordinating, and implementing educational events and programs. - Coordinating with partners to benefit all conservation educational efforts. - Managing a wildlife/fisheries/outdoor recreation program or project that had regional or statewide implications. - Experience with and knowledge of firearm and archery hunting/safety. - Experience with various types and methods of sport fishing, equipment used for sport fishing, and maintenance of sport fishing gear. - Experience with a variety of outdoor recreation activities such as backpacking, kayaking, and outdoor survival/safety. - Have knowledge of using Zoom, MS Teams, Microsoft Word, Excel, and other computer programs.
