New Mexico Highlands University, Department of Forestry · New Mexico · full-time · posted 2 days ago
Dear colleagues and friends, I'm happy to share that the Department of Forestry at New Mexico Highlands University is hiring for a *tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Forestry* positions, starting as early as *August 2027*. If you know a strong ecophysiologist, ecohydrologist, or watershed scientist who wants a place where their teaching, research and work with partners all feed each other, please send this their way. *A place where teaching matters.* Highlands is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with an SAF-accredited forestry program. Classes are small, and field courses are central. Undergraduate and graduate students take part in real research here, and many of them are the first in their families to go into STEM careers. The new colleague will help modernize our Forestry and Conservation Management curricula, and they'll have room to shape the program rather than inherit a fixed one. Faculty who like bringing current research into the classroom, and taking students into the field, do well here. *Being at the center of Southwestern reforestation.* This is an exciting time to join us. NMHU Forestry works closely with NMSU's John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center in Mora and with the New Mexico Reforestation Center, which has operations in Mora and on our Las Vegas campus. The Reforestation Center broke ground this spring and is working toward producing millions of seedlings a year. Much of that effort is aimed at recovery after the 2022 Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, the largest in state history, right in our backyard. The New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute is also housed on our campus. Together these give faculty an unusual seed-to-seedling-to-landscape setting for research and training. Candidates with experience in *plant production, forest nursery management, or tree seedling physiology* would find a lot to build on here. *Preferred specialties:* tree ecophysiology, forest ecohydrology, water resources, or watershed management. We also encourage applicants with strengths in applied forest ecology, forest management, and GIS/remote sensing. A Ph.D. in forestry, ecology, biology, ecosystem science, or a related field is required (ABD candidates will be considered). *Beautiful northern New Mexico.* Las Vegas, NM sits at about 6,400 ft where the Sangre de Cristo Mountains meet the high plains. Within a short drive you'll find ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, and spruce-fir forests, the Pecos Wilderness, and trout streams. The area also has deep Hispano and Indigenous cultural roots, and Santa Fe is about an hour away. NMHU has strong ties with the USDA Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, NM Forestry Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and tribal and NGO partners, so opportunities for collaboration are plentiful. *Full posting and application:* https://www.paycomonline.net/v4/ats/web.php/portal/2881FFE43C19E2921F626A9C2B366153/jobs/238600 I'd be glad to talk with anyone interested about the department, the reforestation work, or life in Las Vegas. Please reach out directly, and please forward this widely. Warm regards, On behalf of the search committee- Michael Remke
