PhD Student – Mammal Community Ecology Location: Texas State University (San Marcos, TX) Starting salary: $37,000/year + benefits Start: August 2027 Requirements: MS degree The Shared Planet Group led by Dr. Alex Jensen and based at Texas State University is recruiting a PhD student to start August 2027. This PhD student’s research will focus on mammal responses to resource pulses, with field work likely primarily occurring somewhat locally. There is funding available for 4.5 years. The core of this PhD project will consist of collecting observational and experimental data on mammal responses to resource pulses in the field. Examples of locally important resource pulses include persimmons, prickly pear, and acorns. Several approaches will likely be used to study these interactions, including camera traps, selective exclusion, and scat surveys. The PhD student will also be expected to lead a paper (one of their chapters) that complements their field project but utilizes existing large-scale data or synthesizes existing research. The PhD student will be expected to mentor undergraduate students, be a collaborative member of our research group, and participate in Biology Department activities. There are funds to attend one national conference and one regional conference per year. Alex encourages people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences to apply but can only consider international applicants that are already living in the US. The PhD student will not have to pay tuition but will be expected to teach (TA) during 4 semesters.
