The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is looking for one highly motivated, detail-oriented individual to assist with tasks related to bear research and management in South Georgia, with a heavy focus in and around the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. This is a part-time position with housing provided in Fargo, Georgia. It will require either a 29-hr or 40-hr per week schedule, depending on the track approved. There is some flexibility regarding the ending date, and the possibility exists for an extended appointment, though not guaranteed. Work within other bear populations across the state is possible and may be required. The position includes both field work and office/data assignments. Main duties will include accompanying the biologist on numerous den surveys in difficult conditions within both the swamp and the mountains. Work in the Okefenokee will involve harsh conditions such as heat, humidity, and biting insects. Interested applicants will be able to maintain a positive attitude and persevere through difficult conditions. The applicant will be able to work a flexible schedule, with weekends and holidays possible depending on weather and data collection needs. An ideal candidate will be able to work well in a team setting and get along well with others as the chosen candidate will live alongside coworkers in close quarters. Given that working with bears frequently involves high-profile and sensitive situations, demonstrated communication skills will be weighed heavily, in addition to professional references and other field experiences.
