Postdoctoral Associate in Mercury Biogeochemistry

Watershed Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene Lab, Cornell University · New York · postdoctoral fellowship · posted today

Subject: Postdoc position in mercury biogeochemistry The Watershed Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene Lab ( http://gersonlab.weebly.com) is recruiting a motivated, collaborative, and curious postdoctoral associate to start in May 2027, as part of a project funded by the Moore Foundation. We study how anthropogenic activities have altered the coupled cycling of nutrients and contaminants through watersheds. We examine the fate, transport, and transformation of these elements within and between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including their consequences for people and animals. This postdoctoral position will investigate the proposed antagonism between mercury and selenium through ambient sampling, mesocosm experiments, and detailed laboratory analysis. It will begin with fieldwork in Peru to collect ambient samples for laboratory analyses, including Synchrotron-based analyses. The postdoc will then lead mesocosm experiments at the Experimental Pond Facility at Cornell University to investigate the impact of selenium additions on mercury cycling and ecological communities. There will also be opportunities for mentoring of students. The Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively, to communicate results in peer-reviewed scientific articles and conferences presentations, and to share their work with relevant community members and leaders. We are looking for an individual who has significant research experience in the field and lab, thinks critically about experimental results, and works independently. Minimum qualifications include: · Ph.D. in biogeochemistry, biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental engineering, environmental science, geochemistry, hydrology, or other related field · Experience conducting biogeochemical laboratory analyses and performing statistical analyses · Experience leading field campaigns · Excellent writing and personal communication skills · Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences · Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team · Curiosity, creativity, and the desire to learn · Commitment to a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive work environment If interested, please email Jacqueline Gerson at jrg386@cornell.edu with a cover letter and CV.
