The Minnesota WS program is recruiting to fill two GS 6/7 Wildlife Specialist positions in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. While the duty station is located at our District Office in Grand Rapids, the positions are intended to help expand our nonlethal program and support the rest of our district throughout northern Minnesota. These positions are funded through multiple projects that ensure diversity in the job and include nonlethal projects (wolf research trapping, composting enclosures, fladry, outreach, etc.) and assisting with other seasonal projects (beaver management, DCCO management, ANG program, etc.). The candidates selected will be expected to either become a licensed UAS pilot, or an Explosives Specialist (certified blaster). Selected candidates may also be required to perform airport related wildlife management activities and/or an equipment operator (skid steer, forklift, etc.), as needed. These positions will be challenging but rewarding, “jack of all trades” type jobs in the Northwoods. The preferred candidates need to be motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team. There is also potential for one of these positions to be converted to a biologist or supervisory biologist position within 2 -3 years. Grand Rapids is in Itasca County, 3 hours north of the Twin Cities, and 1.5 hours west of Duluth, MN. Itasca County has over 1,400 lakes, 500,000 acres of public land, and is also home to 600 + miles of snowmobile trails and 200+ miles of ATV trails. Whatever outdoor recreation you’re seeking- Itasca County likely has it. Offering countless boating, paddling, fishing, and trapping opportunities as well as hunting species including deer, turkey, black bear, waterfowl, and grouse. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildness, home to 1,090,000 acres of pristine forests, glacial lakes and streams in the Superior National Forest is just 2 hours away and Lake Superior- an easy 1.5-hour jaunt.
