A two-year graduate research assistantship at the University of Georgia is available to study the ecophysiology of rocket-stage longleaf pine saplings in southwestern Georgia. Co-advised by Dr. Daniel M. Johnson of UGA and Dr. Steven T. Brantley of The Jones Center at Ichauway (Newton, GA), the student will determine how rapid height growth and high leaf area impact carbon and water relations in longleaf pine rocket stage saplings, with a particular focus on sapling vulnerability to drought stress and fire. The project offers the opportunity to gain experience in field and lab data collection, prescribed fire application, statistical analysis, and scientific communications with diverse stakeholders. Applicants must have a B.S., B.A. or equivalent from an accredited college or university by the position start date. Applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds will be considered, including biology, ecology, environmental sciences, and plant sciences. Lab or field experience in plant physiology, leaf gas exchange, plant allometry, and/or plant water relations is desirable. Undergraduate research experience is a plus. The student will be enrolled in the Warnell School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia. Field work will occur at The Jones Center at Ichauway, a 28,500-acre private research and education center located between Albany and Bainbridge, Georgia. Full-time residence at The Jones Center for 3-12 months is expected to complete field work. Housing will be provided at no cost. The Jones Center's research, education, and conservation programs focus on ecology and natural resource management. The site includes 16,000 acres of longleaf pine forests, ~100 wetlands, and 26 miles of stream and river ecosystems. Further information can be found on our website. A competitive stipend and tuition waiver will be provided over the two-year duration of the project. Expected start date is fall 2027. Interested students should contact Steven Brantley (steven.brantley@jonesctr.org) and Dan Johnson (danjohnson@uga.edu) with a 1-2 page CV, college transcripts (unofficial are fine for now), a brief statement of research experience and interests, and contact information for 3 references. Applications received by November 30 will receive full consideration.
