Hoofstock KEEP placement Safari West is a 400-acre facility in the oak woodlands of Sonoma County in northern California. Safari West is home to a wide variety of species including hoofstock, small mammals, birds and carnivores. Safari West houses 21 different species of hoofstock, with 13 species of African antelope, in a variety of sizes of multi-species habitats with varying terrain. This placement will focus on our hoofstock strings and you will work alongside our keeper staff to learn how we manage our hoofstock housed in these large multi-species habitats. Some of these habitats also have bird species, such as crowned cranes, sarus crane and ostrich. You can view the specific species we currently house by visiting our website at https://safariwest.org/wildlife/. Safari West has recently transitioned to the Safari West Zoological Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization from a privately operated wildlife preserve. Safari West Zoological Society was formed to advance Research, Education, and Conservation (REC). Nonprofit stewardship guides the long-term care of Safari West’s animals, the stewardship of the land and facilities, and the growth of conservation-based research and education. Our Mission Statement Safari West advances wildlife research, fosters environmental education, and champions ecologically sound conservation practices—while sharing knowledge that empowers individuals to make informed choices about their impact on the natural world. Our Vision Statement We envision a future where wildlife is better understood, respected, and protected—and where every guest leaves Safari West with a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the responsibility we share in caring for it. Housing will be provided in one of our tent cabins. Please note that Safari West is not accessible by public transportation and is not walking distance to any grocery stores, restaurants, etc. To leave the facility, you will need to either rent a car or use uber/lyft/taxi services. Some staff may be able to facilitate rides, but this is not guaranteed.
