Ph.D. Assistantship in Global Lake Metabolism

University of Colorado Boulder, Mountain Limnology Laboratory · Colorado · assistantship · posted today

Dear Ecolog community, Dr. Isabella Oleksy is recruiting a Ph.D. student in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Oleksy *Mountain Limnology Lab*, housed in the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, investigates how global environmental change affects aquatic ecosystems. We combine field, modeling, and lab approaches to understand how climate change and other global change drivers influence ecosystem processes in inland waters. The successful applicant will conduct data-intensive research as part of *GLAMR (the Global LAke Metabolism Repository)*, a 4-year, NSF-funded project to build a database that supports synthesis of the fundamental controls on lake metabolic regimes. The student will lead at least three papers testing hypotheses developed by the PI team, with room to pursue independent lines of inquiry. The trainee will build skills in network science and leadership and will complete a six-month hybrid internship with the Environmental Data Initiative (EDI) data management team, learning cutting-edge tools and practices from a leading ecological data group while contributing to GLAMR. The student will also work with four other PIs: Dr. Chris Solomon and Dr. Kathie Weathers (Cary Institute), Dr. Paul Hanson (University of Wisconsin-Madison), and Dr. Stuart Jones (Annis Water Resources Institute). An M.S. in ecology, environmental science, biology, computer science, watershed studies, or a closely related field is strongly preferred, with evidence of research success such as a thesis or publications. Substantial research experience (2-3+ years) may substitute for the M.S. Experience with multivariate statistical modeling, process-based modeling, or machine learning is also strongly preferred. The ability and desire to work with a diverse team of scientists at various career stages is critical. The ideal candidate communicates effectively, is reliable, organized, and respectful, and is committed to team science and a cohesive lab environment. To apply: submit this google form (*https://forms.gle/inTWzwbWGUdodqdv8*). Dr. Oleksy will not respond to direct email inquiries about this position, only to form responses. Please include: 1. A 1-2 page cover letter describing your experience, interest in the position, the core research question(s) you are interested in studying, motivation for pursuing a Ph.D., and interest in my research group specifically 2. A comprehensive CV 3. Contact information for at least three professional references 4. Academic transcript(s), unofficial or official 5. A writing sample *Timeline:* Review of applications begins November 2. Zoom interviews will be held the weeks of November 9 and 16. Start date: mid-August 2027. Candidates must gain acceptance into the EBIO Ph.D. program. Program applications are due December 1, but please apply only after a screening interview with Dr. Oleksy. Due to the high volume of applicants, only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted. The Mountain Limnology Lab is committed to a diverse and inclusive environment, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration. Thank you, - - - - - - - - - - - *Isabella A.
