The Freshwater Community Ecology Lab at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate how fish movement influences the effectiveness of mechanical control strategies for invasive species. This position will focus on building simulation models for smallmouth bass in the Upper Colorado River working with collaborators from the US Geological Survey and the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program. The researcher will evaluate how varying hypotheses regarding fish movement interact with mechanical removal scenarios to best control smallmouth bass populations. This researcher will also have opportunities to get involved with and potentially lead other projects in the Freshwater Community Ecology Lab, including projects focused on stream fish community dynamics, movement, estimating demographic rates, and identifying drivers of population dynamics in a wide range of systems including wadable streams in Ohio, the Colorado River, and Lake Erie. Key Responsibilities • Develop quantitative demographic models to test population sensitivity under diverse removal and movement scenarios. • Translate model outputs into actionable management insight for agency partners. • Work as part of a collaborative research team • Lead manuscript drafting for peer-reviewed journals, prepare reports, and present findings at regional and national conferences Qualifications Required: • Ph.D. in Ecology, Fisheries Science, Quantitative Biology, or a closely related field • Strong publication and presentation record relative to career stage • Excellent communication skills and comfort working with collaborative groups Preferred: • Strong background in quantitative ecology, population modeling, and simulation tools • Prior experience working collaboratively on research projects About the Environment The successful applicant will join the Freshwater Community Ecology Lab under supervision of Dr. Lindsey Bruckerhoff (https://u.osu.edu/bruckerhofflab/ ). The Freshwater Community Ecology Lab is part of OSU’s Aquatic Ecology Laboratory (AEL), a collaborative and dynamic research facility within the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology. The AEL brings together faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and technicians focused on management-driven freshwater research. How to Apply To inquire, please submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV) including contact information for three professional references via email to bruckerhoff.2@ous.edu.
