Title: Trophic & Movement Ecology PhD Positions @FIU, Miami, FL The Seascape Ecology and Coastal Fisheries labs at Florida International University, in Miami, FL have open PhD positions For Fall 2027. Application deadline: December 1, 2026 About the positions: We seek motivated students with a passion for coastal food webs, trophic dynamics, and recreational fisheries. Research will focus on drivers of energy pathways/use, and how mobile, recreational fisheries track prey landscapes and couple food webs across coastal ecosystems, especially as a function of hydroclimatic heterogeneity across riverscapes and seascapes, and the implications of these responses for fisheries sustainability, Everglades restoration, and climate change. Research will combine several methodologies, including stable isotopes, gut content assessments, prey sampling, acoustic telemetry, and habitat mapping. Graduate work will also be conducted in collaboration with the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research Program (FCE LTER; http://fcelter.fiu.edu/) and the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Competitive support will be a combination of research & teaching assistantships. Preferred qualifications: The ideal candidate has a strong interest in and experience with fish ecology, spatial/movement/trophic ecology, and recreational fisheries; excellent writing and quantitative skills; and prior lab and field fish/fisheries experience. A Master’s degree, R coding experience, and prior publications are a plus. About our labs: We are an energetic team of ecologists interested in understanding the drivers of food web structure and function, how consumers track spatially heterogeneous energy resources, and how species movement influences fisheries and responds to restoration efforts. Our sister labs are led by Dr. Rolando O. Santos, seascape ecologist, and Dr. Jenn Rehage, fish ecologist. Our approach to food webs-fisheries-seascape research questions focuses on understanding both ecological processes and patterns, and we thrive on studies that blend the two to inform management, conservation, and restoration efforts in partnership with stakeholders, coproducing science that is fundamental, solutions-oriented & actionable. Our websites: https://seascapes-fiu.github.io/our_lab.html and https://myweb.fiu.edu/rehagej/ To apply: Please email Dr. Rolando Santos at rsantosc@fiu.edu and Dr. Jenn Rehage at rehagej@fiu.edu. In your email, please include: 1) a cover letter (describing research interests, experience, and fit to our labs), 2) CV 3) other supporting documents as needed (unofficial transcripts, publications/presentations, popular writing samples, etc.). Please combine these materials into a single PDF and use ‘PhD applicant 2027 + your name’ as the subject line in your email. We advise students to apply through the Biological Sciences Department (Deadline for application is December 1, 2026 (https://case.fiu.edu/biology/students/graduate-programs/phd-in-biology/admissions/index.html).
