We are hiring interns/technicians to assist ongoing research efforts on the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch, Fisher Co., TX. Job responsibilities will include major efforts in radio telemetry, quail trapping, call count surveys, raptor ID, small mammal trapping, caring for bird dogs, and more. You will receive exposure to a wide variety of data collection techniques, learn to use farm equipment, and gain hands-on experience in habitat management. In March 2007, the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation was granted its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit status as a charitable organization and the deed to our Research Ranch was transferred to the Foundation later that year. Operations began in early 2008, and from that time RPQRF has invested tens of thousands of hours, millions of dollars, and so much more into research, education, and outreach for wild quail both on and off the Research Ranch. Our Research Ranch is 4700 acres of quail habitat representative of millions of acres in the Rolling Plains. It is the living laboratory in which we collect data, manage habitat, and monitor a multitude of ecological relationships. We collect data on bobwhite and scaled quail abundance, survival, reproduction, and movement; small mammal abundance; mesocarnivores; and many quail predators. Our ongoing habitat management activities include planting native grasses/forbs, invasive species control, prescribed fire, managing invasive woodies, and soil disturbance. Qualifications 1. Have earned or are working towards a B.S. in wildlife or other closely related field preferred. 2. Experience with field techniques involving upland game birds (e.g., radio telemetry, trapping/handling). 3. Knowledge/experience with ATVs/UTVs, trucks, and trailers. 4. Knowledge/experience with use of small engines (e.g., lawn mower, chainsaw, power washer) 4. Must be team-oriented but capable of independent fieldwork. 5. Must possess good work ethic and be capable of early morning efforts (call counts) and ability to work in hot weather. Cacti, thorns, and stickers are the norm; rattlesnakes (and other interesting herps) will be encountered in the field. 6. Must have basic computer skills (e.g., Excel, Word). Experience in GIS, social media, and other non-technical communications is desirable. 7. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Expected start date is 12/18/26, but there is flexibility. At a minimum you should plan to stay through mid-May. Shared housing is provided on-site. To apply, send cover letter, resume, and names (and contact information) of 3 references to Mitchell Riggs mriggs@quailresearch.org
