PhD Student - Butterfly Structural Coloration

Rubin Lab, Texas Tech University · Texas · fellowship · posted today

Dear all, Please see the posting below regarding an open PhD position in the Rubin Lab at Texas Tech University, focused on the evolution of structural coloration in butterflies: The Rubin Lab at Texas Tech University seeks a highly motivated PhD student to begin Fall 2027. Research in the lab focuses on the evolution of elaborate traits in animals, especially through the lens of predator-prey interactions. We use a combination of behavioral experiments, physiological assays, phylogenetics, and macroevolutionary analyses to answer questions at mechanistic and evolutionary scales. Click here for the lab website. The primary project of the graduate student will focus on structural coloration in butterflies via color quantification, visual modeling, behavioral experiments, and bioinformatics. While applicants are not required to have previous experience with these techniques, an understanding of evolutionary principles and behavioral ecology is preferred. This work will involve outdoor fieldwork, indoor laboratory/computer work, and natural history museum collections sampling. This position is fully funded through a TA-ship with supplementary summer RA and includes a tuition waiver and health care benefits. Required qualifications: 1) Previous experience with scientific research, as evidenced by a peer-reviewed publication(s) or a draft of a scientific manuscript, 2) Quantitative skills and experience conducting statistical analyses in R and/or Python, 3) Strong motivation to work both independently and collaboratively.
