Definition Under direction of the Veterinarians, plans, organizes, and supervises the daily operational, clinical, and administrative functions of the zoological veterinary hospital, surgical facilities, treatment wards, and quarantine areas, coordinates patient procedure scheduling, diagnostic intake, and quarantine protocols with animal care teams; does other related administrative and clinical duties as required. Examples Of Work • Serves as the primary operational coordinator for hospital workflows, daily patient care, routine and emergency clinical procedures, and preventative health assessments in collaboration with veterinary staff and keeper teams. • Oversees the operation, sterilization, and preventive maintenance of veterinary clinical equipment, including inhalant anesthesia machines, active gas scavenging systems, multiparameter patient monitors (capnography, ECG, pulse oximetry, blood pressure), autoclaves, fluid/CRI pumps, active patient warming devices, and diagnostic ultrasound. • Oversees the on-site veterinary pharmacy, including maintaining perpetual inventories for DEA Schedule II–V controlled substances, managing Class V safe security storage, logging draw-up waste, coordinating outside compounding orders, and managing regulatory disposal and reverse distribution. • Supervises hospital diagnostic laboratory workflows, ensuring routine calibration and quality control for microscopes, centrifuges, and hematology/chemistry analyzers for in-house cytology, manual PCV/total solids, and parasitology surveillance. • Manages radiation safety protocols, equipment certification, and radiation monitoring dosimetry for x-ray equipment in compliance with state radiation protection standards. • Oversees hospital sanitation, biosecurity protocols, and containment procedures across surgical suites, examination rooms, and quarantine/isolation wards to mitigate nosocomial transmission and zoonotic risk. • Coordinates medical intake, barrier biosecurity workflows, sample collection, and testing schedules for animals housed in isolation or quarantine, tracking release criteria established by the attending veterinarian. • Administers electronic medical record (EMR) systems, ensuring prompt, accurate recording of patient treatments, anesthetic logs, diagnostic pathology, and pre-shipment health documentation. • Coordinates procurement of veterinary pharmaceuticals, medical-surgical consumables, personal protective equipment (PPE), and clinical supplies, monitoring inventory budgets and vendor accounts. • Maintains emergency resuscitation readiness, surgical pack sterilization pipelines, and hospital crash carts. • Coordinates necropsy facility preparation, specimen preservation logs, and biological waste disposition in compliance with state and federal veterinary guidelines. Requirements Education Satisfactory completion of sixty (60) college credits from an accredited college or university, including at least twelve (12) credit hours in veterinary technology, animal health science, zoology, biology, or animal science. Experience Four (4) years of experience in a veterinary hospital, clinical zoological facility, or animal health center performing veterinary nursing, diagnostic testing, anesthesia monitoring, and medical treatment, at least one (1) year of which shall have included supervisory, team-lead, or veterinary practice/hospital administrative responsibilities. Substitutions & Credentials • Possession of current credentialing as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) may be substituted for one (1) year of general clinical experience. • Applicants possessing the required twelve (12) specialized credit hours who lack the remaining general education credits may substitute additional qualified veterinary clinical/administrative experience on a year-for-year basis (thirty credit hours equal to one year of experience). • Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 11A:9-11b, applicants with five (5) years of qualified experience in a veterinary hospital or similar facility performing medical treatments, anesthesia, diagnostics, or clinical administration who do not meet all educational requirements shall be eligible. License Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey. Knowledge And Abilities • Thorough knowledge of veterinary hospital administration, surgical suite preparation, and infection control standards. • Knowledge of veterinary anesthesia equipment maintenance, waste anesthetic gas protocols, and multi-species physiological monitoring. • Knowledge of federal DEA and New Jersey Drug Control Unit regulations regarding Schedule II–V drug storage, running logs, and security controls. • Knowledge of clinical pathology, diagnostic cytology preparation, and parasitological diagnostic methods. • Knowledge of radiation safety protocols and personal dosimetry standards. • Ability to supervise, organize, and evaluate technical and clinical personnel in a veterinary medical setting. • Ability to maintain electronic medical records, regulatory pharmacy logs, and supply chain records. • Ability to establish collaborative operational workflows between clinical veterinary staff and animal care departments. • Ability to restrain and handle domestic and non-domestic species safely during veterinary procedures.
