Funded M.S. position in wildfire ecology and climate change Portland State University | Fall 2027 | Global Environmental Change Lab The Global Environmental Change (GEC) Lab at Portland State University is seeking a motivated M.S. student to begin in Fall 2027. The student will develop a thesis project in wildfire ecology in the Pacific Northwest, with possible directions including wildfire and the wildland–urban interface (WUI) or changes in wildfire regimes under climate change. Research may draw on field observations, remote sensing, ecological data analysis, and collaboration with agency or community partners. The student will join PSU’s NSF-funded RECHARGE graduate training program. Year-one support is a 12-month fellowship from September 16, 2027, through September 15, 2028, with a $34k (ca. $2.8k/mo) stipend and a tuition waiver. Year-two support is expected through a graduate teaching assistantship at 0.34 FTE, currently ca. $17k for a nine-month appointment (ca. $1.9k/mo). The GTA salary may increase by Fall 2028. Students will also participate in RECHARGE courses, seminars, workshops, and collaborative activities, including transdisciplinary research and professional development. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in ecology, environmental science, geography, forestry, or a related field; a strong interest in wildfire and climate-change research; and a willingness to work across disciplines and with research partners. Experience with field research, GIS or remote sensing, and quantitative analysis is useful. Quantitative analysis skills in R or Python are preferred. Oregon residency is required because funding for the tuition difference for out-of-state students is not assured.
