Kentucky Reptile Zoo is offering a position as a venomous reptile keeper. The keeper will be responsible for the husbandry of several species of native and exotic venomous snakes, as well as non-venomous reptiles. Training is provided in the techniques required for safe venomous handling. The keeper will also assist in other zoo functions such as performing operational tasks to aid in the process of venom extraction, processing and shipping, assisting other keepers, advising interns, record keeping and interacting with the public as needed. Our small team works closely together to perform a wide variety of tasks, including carpentry, repairs, and basic maintenance of the facility. This is a full-time, 40 hr./week position with two consecutive days off during the week. This position requires working outside in all weather conditions as well as performing a number of physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Keepers also share outreach program responsibilities, which involves traveling with non-venomous animals to a wide variety of groups and schools within Kentucky. Previous reptile experience is required. Applicants must have a minimum bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology or a related field. Previous venomous experience is preferred but not required. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and be able to sit, stand, crawl and grasp objects is required. Successful applicants are willing to follow directions, pay attention to detail and work independently in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will desire to become a long-term team member, and will have opportunities to grow their skill set, professional network, and personal interests. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in this area is $950/month. We are located in a beautiful natural area with great access to hiking and rock climbing, and easy highway access to Lexington and other nearby major cities.
