The Microbial Genomes And Metagenomes to Unravel Traits Lab (mGAMUT Lab; PI: JL Weissman) at Stony Brook University (https://microbialgamut.com/) is recruiting a PhD student to work on an NSF-funded project developing microbial genomic trait prediction and microbiome modeling approaches in permafrost systems (we also have openings in trait-based approaches for studying the human microbiome). Students with a strong background in theoretical ecology, population genetics, and/or statistics and mathematics will receive special consideration. We seek students interested in developing new bioinformatics and mathematical modeling approaches (not just an interest in applying bioinformatics tools or developing pipelines). We primarily recruit students through Ecology & Evolution, but can also support students via the Genetics, and potentially even other programs (e.g., AMS). We welcome a broad range of academic backgrounds to the lab, but we specifically look out for rigorous quantitative preparation.
