Postdoctoral Associate: Wild Turkey Population Genomics

University of Florida Dept. of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation · Florida · posted yesterday

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to join the laboratory of Samantha M. Wisely for a research project investigating the landscape genetics and molecular ecology of Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in Florida. The successful candidate will lead genetic and genomic analyses designed to better understand the ecological and evolutionary processes influencing Wild Turkey populations across Florida. The project will integrate molecular data with spatial and ecological information to investigate patterns of genetic connectivity, population structure, dispersal, relatedness, and reproduction across heterogeneous landscapes. A major emphasis of the position will be the use of spatial and landscape genetic approaches to determine how environmental and anthropogenic landscape features influence gene flow and population connectivity. The project will also incorporate parentage and relatedness analyses to examine reproductive relationships and fine-scale patterns of movement and population structure. Primary Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to: ·         Lead analyses of molecular genetic/genomic datasets from Wild Turkey populations throughout Florida. ·         Conduct population genetic and landscape genetic analyses, including assessment of population structure, genetic differentiation, connectivity, and gene flow. ·         Integrate genetic data with GIS and spatial environmental datasets to evaluate landscape effects on genetic connectivity and dispersal. ·         Conduct parentage, kinship, and relatedness analyses to investigate reproductive relationships and fine-scale population processes. ·         Collaborate with project investigators, graduate students, agency biologists, and other research partners. ·         Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at professional scientific meetings. ·         Assist with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students involved in molecular ecology and wildlife research. ·         Contribute intellectually to the development of additional research questions and proposals emerging from the project. Required Qualifications Applicants must have: ·         A Ph.D. in molecular ecology, conservation genetics, landscape genetics, population genetics, wildlife genomics, or a closely related field by the anticipated start date. ·         Demonstrated experience analyzing population genetic or genomic datasets. ·         Experience working in R and/or other programming environments used for genetic and ecological analyses. ·         A demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and manage large or complex datasets. ·         Excellent written and oral communication skills. ·         Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary research team. Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following: ·         Experience conducting landscape genetic analyses of wildlife populations. ·         Experience integrating molecular data with GIS, remote-sensing, land-cover, or other spatial datasets. ·         Expertise with SNP, reduced-representation genomic, or other contemporary molecular datasets. ·         Experience with population assignment, individual identification, genetic estimates of dispersal, or connectivity modeling. ·         Experience with parentage analysis involving wild populations. ·         Familiarity with spatially explicit models of gene flow or resistance/connectivity modeling. ·         Familiarity with reproducible research workflows, version control, or high-performance computing. Research Environment The successful applicant will join the Wisely Lab at the University of Florida, an interdisciplinary research group working at the interface of wildlife ecology, molecular ecology, conservation genetics, disease ecology, and wildlife management. Expected Salary and Commitment Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and consistent with University of Florida guidelines for Postdoctoral Associates. This is a term position for one year with the possibility for renewal for a second year. Special Instructions to Applicants Please submit the following to wiselylab@ifas.ufl.edu 1.      Cover letter describing research interests, relevant experience, and qualifications for the position. The cover letter should specifically describe the applicant's experience with population or landscape genetics, spatial analysis, and parentage/relatedness analysis. 2.      Curriculum vitae. 3.      Contact information for three professional references. 4.      One representative peer-reviewed publication that best demonstrates the applicant's relevant research experience. Review of applications will begin November 15th  and will continue until the position is filled.
