Florida International University · Florida · posted 5 days ago

Immediate opening for 1-2 full time field/lab technicians in the Dorn Aquatic Ecology lab at Florida International University.  Technicians will be employed through the Institute of Environment and will work in teams as Field Crew Members in the Everglades of southern Florida.  Technicians will sample fish and macroinvertebrates in multiple seasons and assist in running field experiments.  The field work relates to the ongoing research and restoration monitoring of the Everglades freshwater wetlands. Laboratory work includes sample analysis, rinsing biotic samples under a fume hood, identifying fish and macroinvertebrates to species, entering data into spreadsheets, checking data for consistency, sample gear preparation and light construction.  Field technicians will assist Crew Chiefs in maintaining a safe and efficient working conditions by staying up to date with training, operational procedures, interpreting weather conditions and determining when safe field operations are possible.  Travel to field sites is often by airboat. Boat driving and field planning/coordinating may eventually become part of the duties.  Field days start at 6 am on the MMC (main) campus and lab days start at 8:30 am at the BBC campus in N. Miami. The hourly positions are full time for one year and start at $18.75-19.50/h (plus 1.5X for overtime hours) with the option to purchase health benefits from the State of Florida ($25/biweekly). Rates will be commensurate with experience. Raises are possible after 6 months commensurate with changes in duties, funding availability and performance. Extension through a second year is possible but will depend upon performance and lab funding/needs. Applicants should have a B.S. in biology, fisheries, natural resources or related field and some research/field experience. Applicants with MS degrees are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should be highly motivated, well organized, able to follow SOPs, make accurate identifications and measurements and able to work long hours in subtropical wetland field conditions (heat, insects, alligators, snakes, etc.) while maintaining a positive attitude and working with a team.  Technicians must be team players and good communicators that are able to assist wherever needed. Demonstrated evidence of ability to conduct physical labor/fieldwork for a full day is important because fieldwork for 4-5 days per week will be required.  A valid driver’s license and a good driving record are required. To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and contact information for 3 references (in a single M.S. Word or Adobe PDF document) to Dr. Nathan Dorn (ndorn@fiu.edu).  Applicant reviews will begin in November.  The positions will remain open until filled.
