Position and Salary: 3 Full-time Wildlife Technician Positions, $16/hr: ·         1 Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) technician: o   Timeline: Dec - Feb ·         2 University of Florida (UF) technicians: o   1 UF technician: timeline Dec - Feb o   1 UF technician: timeline Nov - June The Game Lab at UF and the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) of FWC are recruiting 3 research technicians for a collaborative Osceola wild turkey ecology research project in south-central Florida. Fieldwork will be located on private property near Melbourne, FL. Shared housing (no pets) will be provided on-site in the form of a fieldhouse as well as field vehicles will be provided. The successful candidates will work under the guidance of a master's student serving as trapping coordinator, alongside other UF and FWC personnel. Focus of the project will be on various aspects of turkey trapping fieldwork including but not limited to: organizing and preparing trapping equipment, scouting and baiting trap sites, trapping and tagging wild turkeys with rocket nets, tracking and downloading data from tagged turkeys, entering data, vegetation sampling, and monitoring nests and broods. Field conditions include inclement weather, both hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, biting insects, and occasional wet conditions. These positions are primarily field work based (~100%). Due to the highly dynamic nature of live-capture operations, the applicant must be able to work an extremely flexible schedule with possible weekend shifts and consistently work early mornings. The applicants must be able to work well in a team setting and get along well with others as the chosen candidates will live alongside coworkers in close quarters. Technicians will work in a team setting during capture season (Dec-Feb). The long-term technician will continue to work alongside the master’s student during monitoring season (Feb-June). Qualifications: Applicants preferably should have a background in wildlife biology and field research and are working toward or have completed a B.S. in Wildlife Biology, Forestry, or a related field. Successful candidates will be expected to have field experience with (1) animal trapping and handling with preference given to applicants with experience in wild turkey trapping and rocket netting, (2) blood draws/bleeding birds, (3) radio telemetry and tracking/triangulating wildlife, (4) operating 4WD vehicles, landscaping tools, and navigation tools including GPS and maps. Applicants must tolerate harsh environmental conditions and work early mornings, long days, late nights, and weekends when necessary. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required. All of the technician roles will be working under 1 collaborative project that will be coordinated by the graduate student Cole Carter on a day-to-day basis.
