White-tailed Deer Research Technician

We are seeking two research technicians to assist in adult and neonatal (i.e., fawn) deer capture associated with the data collection of a PhD student’s research project. Deer capture will be conducted at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC. The research project investigates the interaction between white-tailed deer and invasive mammal species, coyotes and wild pigs. The technician will assist with wild deer capture via dart rifles as well as opportunistic fawn capture to deploy GPS collars. Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to checking and operating game cameras, assisting with daily deer capture events, field necropsies, data entry, and any additional preparation/concluding activities. The applicant is expected to work outdoors for extended hours, which will include early mornings and late evenings. Housing will be provided. Qualifications: Previous experience handling large mammals is preferred, particularly white-tailed deer. The applicant must be comfortable working long hours in the field and driving large 4-wheel drive vehicles as well as able to lift a 50-lb bag. It is equally important that these applicants will demonstrate a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, effective communication skills, and a strong work ethic.  While a bachelor’s degree is not required for this position, it is expected that applicants have previous experience in one of the following fields: fisheries and wildlife management, forestry, natural resource management & sustainability or a closely related field.
