Work in a dynamic and growing Nature Center in a vibrant island community. The organization is located on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) in Lake Erie, Ohio. There is potentially an apartment available if the position is filled quickly. If you live close enough to commute, you will be provided with a Miller Ferry pass to cover the cost of the ferry to the island. This is a year-round position, part-time in the winter and full-time in the summer. The pay range is $20-23/hour with an expected 1,300 hours annually. The contract would go through October 2027 with an option to renew. Benefits may be offered upon contract renewal. Program and Job Description: Located on South Bass Island, the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center provides environmental education for youth and adults, including residents and tourists, through visitation to the Center, programs, educational outreach activities, and printed and digital content. The Assistant Director assists the director in supervising and managing the daily activities of the Center: developing, promoting and supervising hosted programs and events; maintaining the website and social media sites; assisting in applying for available and pertinent grants; working closely with community members and groups to develop and maintain beneficial relationships. The Assistant Director is considered a non-voting member of the Board of Directors and is expected to attend Board meetings, assist in a monthly report to the Board, and participate in Board functions and activities. Reports to: LEINWC Executive Director LEINWC Board of Directors Qualifications: 1. Degree or equivalent experience in the field of biology or environmental studies. 2. Ability to interact positively with staff, volunteers, students, educators, visitors and community members. 3. Experience in education and/or environmental education. 4. Certificates in CPR, First Aid, others as required. 5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Wordpress and social media, office equipment. 6. Capability to work long hours, occasionally physically strenuous, while interacting with people of different ages and backgrounds, in various settings. 7. Experience in administrative duties and managing paid staff and volunteers. 8. Positive attitude, love of nature, diligence, sense of humor and willingness to learn. Responsibilities 1. Organization and supervision of the Nature Center and Employees: a. Manage daily operations and activities at the Nature Center, including visitor tours, Center maintenance, financial transactions. b. Train and supervise all employees, volunteers and interns in both operational duties and educational content. c. Coordinate with Treasurer to collect and verify information for inventories, grant requirements, payroll, etc. d. Supervise and monitor outdoor activity areas and programs. e. Assist in creating, updating and maintaining Center displays and educational materials. f. Assist with & supervise animal care. g. Assist in publishing newsletters and maintaining the LEINWC website, Facebook page, and other social media. h. Promote and advertise Center events and programs i. Assist in creating and maintaining LEINWC employee handbook and other administrative duties as required. 2. Supervision of Wildlife Education programs and outreach: a. Coordinate with Education/Outreach Coordinator to plan and implement tours, on and off-site events and programs. b. Coordinate with Camp Coordinator to plan and facilitate the Islands’ Nature Camp programs as needed. c. Coordinate with Road Scholar Coordinator to plan and implement those programs as needed. 3. Grants and Fundraising: a. Monitor sources for available funding for programs and improvements to the Nature Center. b. Assist in developing, organizing and facilitating approved fundraisers. c. Promote events and donation opportunities. d. Assist in developing and maintaining beneficial relationships with donors, community members, and groups e. Assist in researching and submitting grants to offset expenses as requested. f. Assist in supervising the use of grant awards, producing reports as necessary. 4. Other: a. Obtain or assist with any Certifications or Licenses necessary for the implementation of events and programs. b. Coordinate with Treasurer for accounting and payroll functions. c. Assist in providing monthly updates and reports to the Board of Directors. d. Work closely with the Director and the Board to accomplish these and other duties and programs that may be required or requested.
