PhD student position: Freshwater mussel health and conservation Dept. of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology The Ohio State University Description Freshwater mussels are among the most imperiled groups of animals in the world. As numbers of these animals continue to decline, scientifically informed conservation efforts are imperative for the protection of existing populations. The Watters Aquatic Conservation Center (WACC), which is jointly operated by The Ohio State University, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and Ohio Division of Wildlife, conducts research, propagation, reintroduction, translocation, public outreach, and other conservation-based efforts to help mitigate losses in freshwater mussel biodiversity. We are inviting applications for a funded PhD student position focusing on freshwater mussel health and conservation. The main goal of the project will be to advance health assessment techniques and develop baseline biomarkers of stress. Specific projects will depend on the applicant’s interests, but may include using hematological assessments, metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses, and/or in vitro propagation as tools to better understand mussel physiological responses to known and emerging environmental stressors. Start Date: Fall Semester 2027.
