Bioacoustician Specialist

Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Bioacoustician Specialist to support the Passive Acoustic Ecology Program at NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami, FL. The specialist will lead passive acoustics research projects focusing on key cetacean species—including North Atlantic right whales, Rice’s whales, and sperm whales—to support stock assessments, habitat protection, and risk mitigation under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA). Key Responsibilities • Develop, process, and interpret passive acoustic data to detect, localize, and classify biological and anthropogenic sound sources. • Investigate spatiotemporal distribution, core habitats, and migratory routes of targeted marine mammals. • Plan and participate in field missions to construct, deploy, maintain, and retrieve acoustic hardware (moored/drifting hydrophones, towed arrays, sonobuoys, and gliders). • Synthesize findings into peer-reviewed manuscripts, technical reports, and presentations for NOAA leadership and management counterparts. • Maintain acoustic metadata pipelines and deployment databases on SEFSC servers. Qualifications • Education: Ph.D. from an accredited university in acoustics, oceanography, fisheries, natural science, mathematics, or a closely related field with a strong focus on acoustics. • Experience: 10+ years of relevant professional experience in bioacoustics or marine mammal sciences. • Software & Coding: Demonstrated proficiency in bioacoustic analysis software (e.g., PAMGuard, Raven) and statistical programming in MATLAB and/or R. • Hardware Expertise: Direct experience building, maintaining, servicing, and repairing real-time (towed arrays, sonobuoys) and autonomous (drifting/moored) hydrophone systems. • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with implementing federal mandates such as the MMPA and ESA for protected marine species.
